Nikki Lane @ Lambert’s BBQ – by Jerry Milton

My ACL experience is a 2 hours visit at a band’s request 6 years back. Golf carts zipping us around the stages (yes they have “stops”), artist lounge, blah blah. I was glad to get out of there the sooner the better. This year’s addition would see me doing my best to ignore it, just like any other year. Of course being downtown BOTH weekends, I did have to deal with the “walking dead” as I refer to the drunk, puking, can barely walk folks that were EVERYWHERE as the full day of ACL fun took its toll. BUT I did take full advantage of the opportunity to catch NIKKI LANE by way of Nashville playing one of the ACL night events.

While most folks were at the bigger shows, Nikki was playing at the tiny Lambert’s BBQ and it came as no surprise to see the “sold out” sign as I walked up to the venue.  While waiting in line, the folks that were surprised to see the sign were numerous and no doubt TOURISTS, as any local with a clue would have guessed of a sell out of a venue that can probably hold 75 people tops. I had caught Nikki Lane at the Heartbreaker’s Banquent that took place during SXSW at Willie’s Ranch. Her legs were hard to miss even before she started singing…it was a pleasant surprise to find out what a badass honky tonk singer she was….not surprising on reflection as ALL of the acts that day were stellar. Below was my first view at Willie’s.

Since SXSW, Nikki had released a new album and it was on heavy rotation on MY playlist. All or Nothin‘ sounds exactly like what I remember at Willie’s and a hell of a lot different than her 2011 “Walk of Shame” release.  The previous album was heavy on reverb vocal-wise, and had a rockabilly kinda sound. With her 2014 release, the vocals were clean and the sound was honky tonk 101. Give “Sleep with A Stranger” a listen, yo. Here is a shot from the show at Lambert’s below.

I’ll be looking forward to her upcoming show at Emo’s with Jamestown Revivial on December 6th.   More pics from the Lambert’s show can be viewed on my Flickr account here.
