The
Art of Stephen Schwake
I was introduced to Stephen Schwake one night at Ed's La Cucaracha.
He showed me one of his glass etchings, and I immediately
told him about our art page in Rank and Revue Magazine. Here
is a little background on Stephen. He was raised in Sulphur,
Oklahoma and attended college in Lawton, Oklahoma. He moved
to Austin about twelve years ago. He has been painting for
about fifteen years and drawing for as long as he can remember.
His influences are Dali and custom culture guys like Ed Roth
and Robert Williams. He received a degree in Fine Arts from
UT and is trying to fuse the classical works he learned about
at UT with the underground hot rod and skateboard art of our
times—“A fusing of the highbrow with the lowbrow,”
as he put it. He is interested in pursuing glass etchings
as more of a commercial endeavor, but his oil paintings are
