The Grannies
For Those About to Forget to Rock

Band Reverbnation Page

San Francisco geriatric punk rock phenomena, The Grannies, are back in action with a new record titled, For Those About to Forget to Rock. Formed in 1999 and motoring in granny-garb ever since, the most recent collection of hits was recorded in Seattle with the legendary Jack Endino. Set all production questions aside, you already know how a  Jack Endino recording is going to sound. Totally kick ass! Heavy on the guitar and heavy on the hook! For Those About to Forget to Rock features fourteen brand new classic Granny tracks that fall somewhere deep into the category of Punk and Roll. If you are a fan of The Hellacopters or The Dictators, this record encompasses all points inbetween. I would also highly recommend picking up the LP version of this record as it comes in one slick ass package and includes a download card. One look and listen to this sucker and you’re guaranteed to load your adult diaper…Granny-style!  ~Melvin McMichaels

The Grannies will be appearing at South By Southwest  for multiple shows. At this time, they will be playing at the Karma Lounge on March 15th, Trophys on March 17th, and Nightrawker Live in San Antonio on March 17th. A full listing will be updated in next month’s issue of Rank and Revue. For more information, visit their website at http://www.reverbnation.com/thegrannies.

Small Stone Records

Band on Facebook

Ever what Soundgarden might sound like after being locked in a room with a batch of pot brownies and a steady diet of Pentagram LPs? I think you know where I’m going with that. Small Stone Record brings forth another winner in their long list of winners. In 2008, Small Stone released a record called “Tales” from a band called Iota that featured vocalist and song writer, Joey Toscano. The Dwellers are the succession of that project. Toscano, along with Zack Hatsis and Dave Jones (both formerly of Subrosa) bring six tracks of heavy melodic fuzzy psychedelic rock goodness. This power trio is performing alongside, Suplecs, Tia Carrera, Dixie Witch and more at the Small Stone Records showcase on March 16th, 2012 at Headhunters. The Dwellers open the show so get their early. ~Melvin Mc Michaels

Hipsterectomy
Self-title demo

Bear Bones Recordings

Band on Facebook MySpace

It’s time to throw some props to the local Austin scene. This month, I’m pitching Hipsterectomy. Comprised of members from household Austin bands such as The Bulemics, The Black Irish, Brewtality , Hot Rails to Hell, Knocked Out Stiffs, etc., these working class stiffs bring to the operating table a sweet blend of 80’s hardcore with overtones of stoner and metal. A highlight of the demo includes singer and hunter, Ben P, declaring, “Let’s go hunting, it’s douchebag season” in the band’s first single, “Douchbag Season”.  “Cocaine Cowboy” is another complete rager and entails what every band member aspires to be. This band really has a dislike for dudes who sport their beards down at Starbucks in skinny pants. I can’t say I blame them. Maybe I should have put this review on Yelp, right? Known for their high energy shows and their ability to consume more beer than God, Hipsterectomy will be bringing their angst and aggression to SXSW at various showcases. They are currently scheduled to play the Whoopsy Showcase at Trophys on March 15. Rank and Revue will be posting final listings as they develop.

In the meantime, visit their website at https://www.facebook.com/Hipsterectomy  or http://www.myspace.com/hipsterectomy to listing to the demo and band updates/show listings. ~Melvin McMichaels
