SONGS FROM THE ALBUM “HATE AND LOVE”  SEX2012-6

David Duet (vocals)  Rob Buford (guitar)  Rich Wiley (guitar,) Buxf Parrot (bass)  Pat Doyle (drums)  Mark Kenyon (slide and lap steel guitars)  Walter Daniels (harmonica)

Cover of El Pathos' full length ~ "HATE AND LOVE"

This Austin based  “super band” is a gritty mix of players. With members hailing from such diverse bands as The DiCKS , The Offenders and Cat Butt, to name a few;  you can see where this mixed bag of sounds and textures come from. The two songs from El Pathos on this sampler are from their full length release “Hate and Love”.

STRAIGHT INTO THE SUN ~ 3:29~  With the intensity and fluidity of a band that knows itself , this song gets where it is going. Songwriting is at it’s best when the band can groove , without over doing this , or slacking on that. Then the words are layered on and become one with the song. SUN reminds me of some classic garage doozies , it  swings and drives. Front man Duet throws down great lyrics , and a vocal style that  belies years of listening and learning.  A call to arms for the “ones” who would not “take it anymore”.

El Pathos "LIve" ( left to right) Mark Kenyon , Rich Wiley , David Duet , Pat Doyle , Buxf Parrot and Rob Buford

YESTERDAY MOURNING ~ 4:37~  A ballad of the demons in our soul and the pain in our hearts. Bouncing around on the bar stool circuit and the effects on our hearts and minds. The guitars pick sweet sounds that are soothing yet poignant , accentuating the emotionality of the lyrics. The lap and pedal work provide a cerebral accent on this song and the mouth harp weaves in and out with melancholy affect. SUN sheds tears of damnation , but screams for redemption.*******************************************************************

SONGS FROM THE ALBUM “WHITE BBQ SAUCE”  SEX2011-4

Hans Frank

Hans Frank on vocals, bass, and keyboards; Tony Gloria on drums and percussion; and über guitarist “Dangerous” Danny Aaron, formerly of THE DANGEROUS TOYS.

WHITE BBQ SAUCE ~~ 4:18~ This is a love song , y’all . The back beat is at once driving and hypnotizing. Guitars and drums set a stripped down rhythm that will stick in yer head for hours , if not days. Hans Frank’s vocals seal the deal with the tones and inflection that take me back to Iggy Pop or Peter Murphy. And with the smoky cool harmonica laid down by Texas music harp master Walter Daniels , this song grooves. With the cred to rock any hooch joint in the world , WHITE BBQ SAUCE , is thick and tasty !!!

Tony Gloria

I MUST BE THE DEVIL ~~ 3:49~  Fuzzy guitar and boogie-woogie piano greet ya on this one. With a clean beat furnished on the trap set by Tony Gloria , this homage to carnal hi-jinx rocks it simple and sweet.

Dangerous Danny Aaron

Confessions of  maniacal crimes committed in the heat of passion .  The Horned One on the prowl in a Plymouth Valiant with the evilest of intentions. Dangerous Danny Aaron’s guitar leads and rhythm work puts the sweet and devilish icing on the cake.  Hans Frank admits : ” I MUST BE THE DEVIL”  and to that I say : “HUZZAH” !  Knowing we are all the devil at one time or another is half the battle.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Piñata Protest

FROM THE ALBUM “PLETHORA RELOADED”  SEX2012-1

Alvaro Del Norte (accordion and lead vocals)  Matt Cazares (guitar , backing vocals ) Marcus Cazares (bass , backing vocals) and J.J. Martinez (drums).

Piñata Protest (left to right) JJ Martinez ,Marcus Cazares, Alvaro Del Norte and Matt Cazares

JACKEE ~~ 1:54~  This offering from Piñata Protest  is at once as punk rock as possible, especially because of Del Norte’s accordion attack. The drums keep the beat pumping while the guitar and bass fall in line. The urgency of the tune is exacerbated by the vocals and song content. These cats like it short and sweet , like many of the great punk bands that influenced Del Norte : The Ramones, The Clash and The Sex Pistols. Though deeply infused with norteño , Jackee sounds more like an old sea shanty or a  call to battle for pirates or other “undesireables”.  A spicy mix of styles and influences.

ROCKET ~~ 2:14~  The intro to ROCKET is an instrumental one. Faster , hotter and louder than the verse before it. Slow at first , then the up strum on the guitar and the backbone of the tune is , ironically, the accordion. It sets the mood and tempo. With the abandon of the Pogues on a bender , these cats use their gits , drums and accordion with attitude and precision. Piñata Protest have to be a must see “live” band. The  These guys are to Tex-Mex punk rock music what Gorgo Bordello is to Gypsy Punk. ! Vive Piñata Protest!  *******************************

Snowbryd

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Snowbyrd/165653626277

FROM THE FORTHCOMING ALBUM “HILL COUNTRY COLD BEER BRIGADE”

Chris Lutz- (vox/guitars)  Scott Lutz- (guitars/steel/keys/vox)                                                       Dale Johnson- (bass/trumpet)  and  Ken Robinson- (drums)

Snowbyrd

AFTER  PARTY ~~ 2:33~   San Antonio’s Snowbyrd are a band that layer sounds and styles from psychedelic pop , to country to folk rock. AFTER PARTY serves up some Latin tones mixed with vocal harmonies that hearken to The Byrds or The Animals. Uber warm and low bass sound that holds steady and strong. The lead on guitar wafts through the song like a refreshing breeze at a Texas beach party. This is a song to sip yer Modelo or Margarita to , while your toes get tickled by the sea and sand. Enjoy.

Snowbyrd rocks the Carousel Lounge in Austin , Texas

SUICIDAL FRIENDS ~~2:15~ Super fuzz goodness on guitars  , topped by vocals that channel Marc Bolan from T Rex or Bowie circa the “Diamond Dogs” record. The pedal steel and keyboards accentuate the simultaneously dirty AND clean sound of SUICIDAL FRIENDS. Bass and drums in the pocket , and holding fast. This rhythm section is solid , letting the guitar , steel and keys flow high and low. Multiple levels of music and vocals , stacked high and tight.

FROM THE  7″ SINGLE & DIGITAL EP “JUST THE TWO OF US”  SEX2012-4

Bill Anderson (guitar);

Joe Doerr (vocals, harp);

Adam Kahan (bass);

Billysteve Korpi (guitar);

Julien Peterson (drums);

A MESSAGE FROM FIRMIN DESLOGE ~~4:06~  Super Fuzz intro. Sweet second line rhythm put down by the super fluid drums (Julien Peterson)  and fuzz guitar ( Bill Anderson and Billysteve Korpi ) and bass ( Adam Kahan).  Like the funk unique to the South and the Gulf Coast like New Orleans’ funk masters “THE FUNKY METERS” .  Growling vibrating guitars change into that “Yardbird  Strum” , clean and funky like “Catfish” Collins from the James Brown band . Joe Doerr belts out lyrics earnestly and directly with some D.Boone undertones.  The harp just drives the issue home.

(l to r) Julien Peterson , Bill Anderson , Adam Kahan, Billysteve Korpi and Joe Doerr

METANOIA ~~ 3:12~   Sweet intro :  guitars , bass and drums whip this jam into gear with the heart pounding beat you might hear if Captain Beefheart had a revivalist tent in the woods and/or bayous of Louisiana. Straight ahead vocals and lyrics , Doerr sings the words with deliberation and gumption. Churchwood’s METANOIA channels the greats like Cowboy Mouth or early Mojo Nixon. Churchwood are just a sweet Texas gumbo of influences , but they are a flavor unto themselves. And with the digital EP , “JUST THE TWO OF US”  ,  we get a heaping spoonful of that sweet AND spicy flavor.

Chief Fuzzer

FROM THE  7″ SINGLE & DIGITAL EP ” TRANSCENDENTAL ROAD BLUES”
Spencer – Bang
Shane – Boom
Cody – Sizzle

TRANSCENDENTAL ROAD BLUES ~~ 5:11~ Is it possible to put down a bluesy riff and drum beat , then without warning careen into acid rock psychedelia ? It is if you are Chief Fuzzer. This one reels you down the road with a Delta blues intro that deliciously morphs into a Cream or Jefferson Airplane mind trip. Then back to the down home groove and driving drums and bass that take you back to another dimension while the tin can vocals accent the ride.

BAD SHE GONE VOODOO ~~3:24~  Chief Fuzzer live up to their name in this song. The git and drums raise yer blood pressure and the vocals scream out with an urgency that reminds me of Metallica circa “Kill ‘Em All” . The vocals taunt you for sitting there.

This 3 piece brings way more noise and power than many other bands with more members and/or instrumentation. Chief Fuzzer brings the noise. Sweet wah pedal solo on this one , too. If yer not ready to trip the rock fantastic , this aint fer you. But if you wanna shake , rattle and roll: GIT YOU SOME CHIEF FUZZER.

Thom “Tex” Edwards

FROM THE ALBUM “INTEXICATED”   SEX 2012-2

IF LOOKS COULD KILL ~~ 3:45~

T. Tex Edwards w/ The Loafin’ Hyenas : Click Mort (guitar) , Rob “Graves” Ritter (bass) , Hermann Senac (drums) and Tom Blaylock (fiddle)

LOOKS was recorded in 1990. T. Tex Edwards’ vocals are as eerie as the venomous words he sings. When the heart turns cold , one death is not enough for the likes of “her” . Hell hath no vengeance like a man scorned. LOOKS blends the guitars and drums that paint a dark backdrop for Edwards’ story of anger and contempt for the femme fatale the song is directed at.  Reminiscent of the “darker” music coming around at the end of the 80’s and into the ’90’s.   Tex and company layer  their instruments artfully and his lyrics tell a story of love turned to hate.  Some say “Love Stinks” ,  Tex says “Love KILLS”.

Thom Tex Edwards

LEE HARVEY ~~ 3:16~ (Phil Bennison, Jay Cotton, Benni-songs, Ben-Jay Music BMI)

T. Tex Edwards w/ the Hickoids : Richard “Dusty Dick” Hayes (bass, vocals) ,  Davy Jones (guitar) , Stan Moore (drums) and Scott E. Mckenzie (lap steel guitar)

“Lee Harvey was a friend of mine…”  LEE HARVEY opens with an unapologetic ode to America’s “patsy” of the year (1963)  Lee Harvey Oswald. This is a sing-along y’all. The Hickoids do what they do best : swing , rock and groove. T. Tex Edwards sings the words with a twang and conviction that make the song work.  LEE HARVEY is an awesome blend of chicken wire swing and Dealey Plaza conspiracy ! We all know Lee Harvey was innocent , and a great neighbor that  played baseball with the kids and took ’em fishing.

T. Tex Edwards is an undeniable and pioneering force in the world of Texas music. His recent full length: “INTEXICATED” is a cornucopia of music from 1982 to 2001. An amazing anthology of Edwards and some kick ass recording luminaries. A must have for fans of T. Tex Edwards , both old and new. Lotta work and heart went into this record.**************************************************************

The Copper Gamins- Los  Niños de Cobre

http://www.reverbnation.com/thecoppergamins

http://www.facebook.com/thecoppergamins

FROM THE EP  “THE COPPER GAMINS”  SEX 2012-3
Voz, Guitarra – J. Carmen
Bateria (drums)- Clau Lafania

RUBY RED ~~ 2:42~  Two piece out of Zinacantepec , Mexico. Refreshing take on an old standard , Delta blues. But the Gamins are a kinetic ball of lo-fi goodness. Like many before them,  they hail a musical style as roots to America as you can get. But like very few before them , they put a nice twist on the genre. More like the Mummys or Doo Rag than Robert Johnson , but that is saying a lot for these two “young” rockers. I can see why Jeff Smith went south of the Texas/Mexico frontera (border) to sign these cats. Would love to see ’em live !!

 CANDY MAN BLUES ~~ 2:23~ Starting with a standard riff , the Gamins up the ante in this song to a rising crescendo of distortion and a pounding beat. The Gamins have recorded a full length already , and it is looking for a Fall release. Good news from our southern neighbors ,  who breathe a cool breath into  a
blues/punk/garage bag during an acute case of  hyper-ventilation , Copper Gamins style !!***************************************

Los #3 Dinners

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Los-3-Dinners/127104693973623

http://www.reverbnation.com/los3dinners

FROM THE FORTHCOMING ALBUM “CON SAFOS: BEST OF LOS #3 DINNERS

Lenny as Dr. Frankenstine, Frank as Freak, Jake as The Crawling King Snake, Joe as Surfer, Bart as Dr. Lucky and Rudy as himself.

CAN’T STOP…GOTTA ROCK ~~5:40~  Roots rock , San Antonio style….. a song about the love for the entropic and never dying beast know as Rock and Roll. CSGR is a live track that benefits from the crowd singing the chorus back to the DINNERS. Charlie Watts drum beat and both clean and fuzzy gits. It may be the war cry of bar and venue hoppers everywhere. Some folks just don’t  understand that a person’s love for their hot rod , fave band or local dive is different than human love. It is a declaration of the thing that gets most of us through the day:  Good Rock and Roll !

THAT’S LOVE ~~7:54~  Fuck Brad Paisley , this is the THAT’S LOVE  I wanna hear. L3D is up that highway of rock purism. A steady back beat , great guitars , a tight rhythm section and lyrics and vocals to seal the deal. This is a bare essentials style I first heard decades ago from the likes of Dave Alvin and Joe Ely. Songs about shit everybody can relate to. Backed by good honest rock and roll. Great leads on this one too. Looking forward to their forthcoming “best of” release.*******************************************************

Derby Crush ~~  3:01~ High octane stinger about a high velocity heavy hitting vixen. And it goes ’round and ’round. Singer $3 Bill professes his love and/or lust for the baddest of  the lady “gladiatresses” on 8 wheels in the coliseum of  our desires. And the band lays down a track that might be oval and banked , but is sho ‘aint FLAT !!   This is a rally song  y’all. So..RALLY!  Video for “Derby Crush” @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsK7Va9Iq3A

Cleo’s Gone ~~ 2:29~  Great little ditty about the legacy of music, that lives on through the record collection of  Cleo.  Picked up in a thrift store. Anybody remember record stores? If you do,  chances are you will appreciate the pop/psychedelic flow on “Cleo’s Gone”.   “Let’s party…. Let’s groove” is the Sportscasters’ battle cry. “Shake your ass…Bust a move !! ”
C’mon people , the world is your dancefloor !  Blended and sweetly layered guitars play in and around the rhythm. Drums and bass hold down the line with subtle efficiency. The keys accentuate and augment this jam, brothers and sister!!  Cheers to the Gay Sportscasters and the Lollygaggers !!

From left to right: Jacob Shulze , Andy Thomas, Michael Ann McCarthy, Steve McCarthy (Behind Smitty) Jeff Smith, William " $3 Bill" Wise , Rice Moorehead, Davy Jones, and Adrienne Rocha. The Gay Sportscasters show their Flaming Pride.... w/ The Lollygaggers!!
